Eunice, Malawi, enrolled in 2021

Born and raised in Chitipa, a remote mountain village near Malawi’s borders with Zambia and Tanzania, Eunice grew up watching her family sacrifice endlessly to support one another. In one of the world’s poorest countries—where over half the population lives in poverty—basic needs like education, healthcare, and clean water are often out of reach. Success in Malawi demands perseverance, grit, and, most critically, support. Mercy Beyond Borders is proud to be part of that support system for Scholars like Eunice.

As a nursing student, Eunice is committed to helping others, but a medical crisis put her on the other side of the hospital bed. While completing her clinical training at a local hospital, she suddenly fell ill and was admitted as a patient just weeks before exams. After her discharge, she fell sick again and was readmitted for another week. With no clear diagnosis, doctors put her on a course of strong antibiotics, draining what little resources she had.

The illness took a toll on her academics, leaving her little time to prepare for exams. Now, she’s adjusting her approach, spending more time in the practical skills lab and structuring her coursework to stay ahead. She is determined to succeed and is on track to graduate with a nursing degree in 2026.

Beyond academics, Eunice is also gaining critical life skills. After struggling with managing her finances, she participated in an MBB Financial Literacy session, where she learned how to set and follow a budget—a skill that will serve her far beyond the classroom.

Despite her own challenges, Eunice remains deeply committed to public health. She and her classmates recently led a health talk for primary school students, educating them on malaria prevention—teaching both treatment options and how natural remedies can ward off mosquitoes.

For Malawian women breaking gender barriers, resilience isn’t optional—it’s survival. When a national fuel crisis upended her academic schedule, she adjusted. And when Malawi’s currency lost 40% of its value in 2024, forcing her parents to move away to keep her siblings in school, she adapted.

“Thank you, MBB, for standing by us amidst challenges in our country,” Eunice says.

A Malawian proverb states, “A rolling stone gathers no moss,” a reminder that persistence and momentum are key to success. Eunice embodies this—focused, determined, and moving steadily toward her future.
