Christella, Haiti, enrolled in 2016

Living in rural Gros Morne, Christella’s journey home from town is far from simple. It begins with a long motorcycle ride crossing the river 33 times, followed by a steep climb up a cobblestone path to the courtyard of a local church, where her family is deeply involved. From there, it’s a short walk to her home—a sturdy, modest house of rock and concrete, topped with a tin roof.

Throughout her schooling, Christella faced significant challenges, including persistent health issues like typhoid. Yet, she pushed forward and was recognized for her leadership and service during the 2022/2023 academic year. She organized tutoring sessions with her classmates, mentored younger Scholars, and now holds study groups for local children under the mango tree in her family’s courtyard. Christella helps her father-in-law and neighbors with household tasks, enjoying communal trips to the river for washing—an opportunity to connect through shared stories and songs.

“MBB holds a special place in my heart,” Christella reflects. She’s deeply grateful for the support she received from staff during difficult times, especially after a tragic loss. “MBB never abandoned me. They taught us to believe in ourselves.”

During moments of doubt, the leadership sessions, particularly those featuring Women Role Models, renewed her determination to continue her education. Christella also thanks Gina and Geri for the counseling they provided to her and her family, which helped to rebuild strained relationships. "MBB always stays connected to the Scholars, and we know their staff is there to support us."

Christella credits Mercy Beyond Borders and its donors for helping her achieve her first dream—graduating from high school. Now, she sets her sights on studying administration at university, eager to create even more opportunities for herself. She is one of 21 Mercy Beyond Borders high school graduates in Haiti for the 2023/2024 school year and remains a source of inspiration within her community.
